MORTAL SIN 2025

HISTORY

1985–1996: Mayhemic Origins
Mortal Sin emerged from Sydney’s western suburbs in the mid-1980s, quickly rising to the forefront of the Australian metal scene. With the original lineup of Wayne Campbell (drums), Andy Eftichiou (bass), Mat Maurer (vocals), Keith Krstin (guitar), and Paul Carwana (guitar), the band unleashed their Metallica-inspired debut album, Mayhemic Destruction. The album gained traction internationally, earning the band an overseas record deal and establishing them as the country’s most important thrash metal act by 1987.
Following the album’s release, Mick Burke (ex-Slaughter Lord) replaced Krstin on guitar. The band's reputation grew further when they supported Metallica on their 1989 Australian tour. That same year saw the release of their second album, Face of Despair, followed by a European tour with Testament and Faith No More.
Upon returning to Australia, internal tensions flared. Maurer left the band, citing dissatisfaction with the lineup. In 1991, Eftichiou continued under the Mortal Sin name with an entirely different lineup, resulting in a legal dispute with former members. Despite the turmoil, this version of the band released an album and a single before eventually disbanding.
In late 1996, Mortal Sin reformed with four original members - Maurer, Campbell, Eftichiou, and Carwana - joined by guitarist Anthony Hoffman. Carwana’s return was short-lived and he was soon replaced by Troy Scerri. The band released the mini-album Revolution of the Mind, which featured re-recorded classics, reworked demos, and two new original tracks, marking a brief but meaningful revival.

2004–2011: Out of the Darkness
In February 2004, Mortal Sin resurfaced with original members Mat Maurer, Wayne Campbell, and Andy Eftichiou, joined by former Addictive guitarists Joe Buttigieg and Mick Sultana. Their comeback show was captured on film and released as a limited-edition DVD titled Out of the Darkness.
In early 2005, Mortal Sin was inducted into the Hall of Fame at both the Metal for the Brain and Kerrang! Australian Heavy Metal Awards. Soon after, drummer Campbell and guitarist Buttigieg departed, replaced by Luke Cook (drums) and Nathan Shea (guitar).
Just six weeks later, the revitalised lineup toured Australia with metal legends Anthrax, and by October had entered the studio with producer Phil McKellar to record the Out of the Darkness CD single.
Following a show in Hamburg and a performance at the infamous Wacken Open Air Festival, the band returned to the studio to complete their long-awaited full-length album. In April 2007, Mortal Sin opened for Slayer and Mastodon, then signed with Armageddon Music (Germany) and Riot Entertainment (Australia) to release An Absence of Faith.
March 2008 saw their return to Europe, touring with New York thrash kings Overkill, and sharing festival stages with Megadeth (Metal Mania) and Destruction (Inferno Festival). Just four months later, Mortal Sin returned to Europe again for the summer festival circuit, appearing at Wacken, Jalometalli, Alcatraz, and Headbangers Open Air.
Over the following years, the band played support slots for Judas Priest, Testament, and Kreator, and embarked on a full South American tour in late 2009. Following Mick Sultana’s departure, guitarist Ryan Huthnance joined the ranks, with the band once again touring alongside Overkill.
In September 2011, Mortal Sin released their final studio album to date, Psychology of Death, and capped off the year by joining the Thrashfest Classic Tour across Europe with Sepultura, Exodus, Destruction, and Heathen.

The Present: Reignited Destruction
In July 2025, Mortal Sin reunited once more to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album Mayhemic Destruction. The latest incarnation of the band features original members Mat Maurer and Andy Eftichiou, alongside Nathan Shea and Ryan Huthnance, and proudly welcomes George Delinicolis - powerhouse drummer from Sydney band Live Wire.
To launch the next chapter, Mortal Sin announced the first of many live shows, returning to Europe for the Keep It True Festival in Germany, slated for April 2026.
This is just the beginning.
